In Our Backyard
Has It Been a Year Already?!?
It is hard to believe that it has been a year since I launched "In Our Backyard." When I approached Herald-Progress Editor Greg Glassner with the idea of a visual celebration of life in Hanover county, we were both curious as to how a weekly photo essay would work out. We both recognized the possibilities and challenges involved in making the commitment to capturing the people, places, and things that make Hanover such a special place. Looking back at year one, I would have to say it has been an overwhelming success!
As much as it has been a thrill for me, exploring the county photographically, it has also produced its share of frustrations: mainly for the events I cannot cover and for the photos that we do not have room to print. However, the reader feedback and comments have been so incredible, I know we are doing something right. From a professional standpoint, it was extremely motivating to have images earn two first place and two second place recognitions in the Virginia Press Association this past year.
One thing I have been wrestling with is "How can I give back?" Of all the stories and personalities I encountered in the past year, the one that struck me the most is Dana Nelson's Operation Hope. To contribute to Dana's efforts, I am offering the following: 1) 20% off the top of all "In Our Backyard" reprints will go to Operation Hope, and 2) $10 from every "In Our Backyard" calendar will go to Operation Hope. Please join me in supporting this incredible program. Check out all the backyards at www.skippix.biz/iob.
This brings me to the point of asking, "What can I do to make it even better?" I have met so many interesting people, but I know there are many, many more out there who have stories to tell. If you have ideas, please, let me know! Send your suggestions to skip@skippix.biz. I can't shoot everything, but I will do my best to cover as much as I can. Thanks again for all the feedback and support; here's looking to another great year of "In Our Backyard!"
